  1. Beans

Beans are first in our list of foods that cause gas problems. Not only beans are notorious for creating gas, but this food is also the subject of many schoolyard rhymes about breaking wind. Beans have a high soluble fibre content, which causes gas, and they also contain a gas making sugar called raffinose, so their reputation is well founded!

  1. Gas producing fruit

Some fruits are especially adept at producing gas too. The worst culprits are the fruits that contain sorbitol, such as apples, prunes and peaches. Fruits also contain soluble fibre, which adds to the effect.

  1. Fizzy drinks

We mentioned fizzy drinks in the introduction, but they warrant a mention of their own too. Carbonated drinks, like soda, can fill you up with air and cause painful bloating and embarrassing gas. They also contain some sugars that the body will find hard to digest and that will cause even more gas.

  1. Milk and dairy products

Milk and dairy products are also included in our list of foods that cause gas problems. Over twenty percent of the population is lactose intolerant and that can be a major cause of gas. The only way to stop this, if you are lactose intolerant, is to limit your intake of dairy products or to take supplements before you eat any dairy produce.

  1. Starchy foods

When starch foods are broken down by the digestive system, they too will create gas in the system. The main culprits here are the high carbohydrate foods, like corn, potatoes and wholegrain foods. Strangely though, rice doesn’t seem to have the same effect.

  1. Hard candy

When you eat hard candy, you tend to swallow a lot of air with it, and that will lead to more gas. Candy also contains the gas causing ingredient, sorbitol, which will also increase the production of intestinal gas.

  1. Oats

Another one of popular foods that cause gas problems is oatmeal. Oats are a great tasting and healthy food that helps lower cholesterol, but they are also pretty effective at increasing your gas production. In this case, it’s the high levels of soluble fibre that is found in oats that is the cause of the gas problem.

  1. Chewing gum

You wouldn’t have thought that gum contained enough of anything to be a cause of gas, but it does. Just the act of chewing the gum can make you swallow air and many types of gum also contain gas inducing sugars as well.

  1. Gas inducing vegetables

The sugars and fibre in some vegetables will also cause excessive gas sometimes. The best known vegetables for this are probably Brussels sprouts and cabbage, but even vegetables like peas and artichokes can cause gas in the intestines.

  1. Processed food

Processed food often has added ingredients like lactose and fructose that can cause a lot of gas. The combination of that, and the other unhealthy ingredients that processed food contain, can cause your digestive system to not operate efficiently and create more gas.
