The group that didn’t get thymoquinone experienced significant increase in size of liver tumor. The rats which were given 20mg of thymoquinone for 1 kg body weight were found to have their liver injury markers and tumor markers reduced. There was no development of cancer nodules in this group. There was lesser tumor formation compared to the group that didn’t receive any thymoquinone.
The scientists came to the conclusion that thymoquinone helped in treating liver cancer due to its powerful ability in preventing proliferation of cancer cells.
In another study in Egypt that involved human liver cancer cells, scientists conducted laboratory experiments. They studied the anti-tumor properties of black seed oil and bee honey in 2012. So the researchers studied how catechin (green tea), thymoquinone (black seeds), and 5-FU (chemotherapy drug) caused structural alterations within human colon cancer cells and affected metabolic activity in lab cultures. They found that the thymoquinone and catechin helped in destroying a large population of cancer cells. They were also found to interfere with cellular metabolic functions. This could be compared to the effects on cells exposed to 5-FU. At the morphological level, the cellular changes took place after the cells were exposed to the thymoquinone and catechin for 24 hours. This could again be compared to the kind of cellular changes noted in the case of cells that received exposure to 5-FU (the chemotherapy drug). These researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center came to the conclusion that these natural agents are potentially safe for treating colon cancer.
