STUDY: EATING WHITE BREAD & BAGELS CAN BE WORSE THAN SMOKING – 49% INCREASE IN LUNG CANCER
According to one alarming study, eating foods which have high glycemic index (GI) like white bread, rice, and bagels increase the risk of developing lung cancer by 49%, especially for those who don’t smoke. The researchers studied the diets of 4,320 people and were stunned by the results when they saw that non-smoker with diets high on the GI have double the risk to develop lung cancer, compared to those whose eating habits remained on the low end of the GI.
The foods which have high GI raise blood glucose and insulin, causing increased insulin growth factors (IGFs), connected to greater risks for lung cancer development.
There was a study conducted on 1,905 people who were diagnosed with cancer, as well as 2,415 healthy people and it was done by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (published in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention). According to the outcome of the study, besides maintaining healthy lifestyles like avoiding tobacco, limiting the consumption of alcohol, being physically active, reducing foods and beverages with high GO may serve as a way to decrease the risks of lung cancer, says Dr. Xifeng Wu. Number one cause of cancer deaths in the USA is actually lung cancer. There are more than 150,000 people who will die from this disease in 2016 alone, says the American Cancer Society.
Another study showed that Americans eat more than half their calories through “ultra-processed” foods, directly contributing to health issues like heart disease and obesity. Such foods contain several manufactured ingredients which are not generally used when cooking from scratch, involving a artificial and natural flavors or colors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other additives. Those foods include: chicken and fish nuggets, packed snacks (sweet and savory), packed baked goods, and instant noodle products.
These highly processed foods are made in order to imitate natural foods, often disguising undesirable qualities of the final product, says the lead author of the study, Prof. Carlos Augusto Montiero at the University Of Sao Paulo School Of Public Health, Dept. Nutrition.
Montiero told CBS News that diets of fresh foods and minimally-processed products such as simple breads and cheeses are the healthiest. The ultra-processed ones are marketed and manufactured to replace those foods, meals, dishes, and drinks. The processed foods are loaded in sugars, saturated fats, and sodium, contributing to many health problems like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other.
The two studies suggest that people have to cut out highly-processed foods and rely on natural diet rich in fruits, whole grains, and vegetables.
