When Jennifer Cramblett and her partner Amanda Zinkon decided to start a family in 2011, Jennifer decided to get pregnant by in vitro fertilization.

The couple went to a sperm bank in Ohio, USA so they could start the process and find the appropriate sperm donor. Considering the fact that they were using a sperm bank, they had the possibility to choose the person who they wanted to be the biological father of their baby. They had certain things in mind and chose donor number 380 who had blue eyes, blond hair and the most important thing – white skin.

When they made the choice, Jennifer underwent in vitro fertilization by a doctor who had used the sample from the sperm bank. Everything went smooth and the dream of these two women that wanted to have a family was one step closer to become true.

9 months later, Jennifer went into labor and was quickly delivered to hospital, where she got the greatest shock in her life when she gave birth: her baby didn’t look anything as they expected. The child had black skin and the couple was shocked!

How could this happen? As it turned out, the sperm bank had accidentally mixed up the white donor that the couple demanded because of misreading the number 380 and exchanged it with number 330, who was African-American.

On one hand, Jennifer was brokenhearted and she had to fight the feelings of anger, disappointment and fear because of them raising a black child. She grew up in a town where there were no people of black skin and her first interaction with that kind of a person was when she went to university. She didn’t know anything about their culture and wasn’t ready for a mixed-race parenting. She feared that her conservative family wouldn’t accept her black daughter.

On the other hand, the sperm bank really did a horrible mistake. This kind of a mistake can change someone’s whole life, as it is in Jennifer’s case.

Jennifer is now suing the sperm bank because of negligence and fraud. The trial should be finished later this year.

The sperm bank should be responsible for not giving the specific sperm donor that Jennifer and Amanda had looked for. This kind of a mistake isn’t small and it will definitely influence this couple till the end of their lives. The lawsuit drew a lot of media attention. Jennifer and Amanda claim that they really adore their daughter and give their best every day so that she could grow up in a healthy atmosphere.
