After having a meal, people have different habits – some lay down for a while, some smoke a cigarette, while others eat fruit. However, some of these habits are not only unhealthy – they can seriously harm your health as well. Here

are the 5 things you shouldn’t do after eating:

 Do After Eating

Eat fruit

Fruits are best consumed before a meal, not after. Fruits require special enzymes in order to be digested, and the sugars present in them may take a while to be fully absorbed. Eating fruits before your meals will also help you completely absorb their nutrients, while eating them after a meal can cause a host of digestive problems.

Smoke

Smoking is bad on its own, but it’s especially bad after a meal. You may smoke a cigarette a couple of hours after a meal as it contains nicotine which binds to excess oxygen your body needs for digestion. According to studies, smoking after a meal is equal to smoking 10 cigarettes at once and significantly increases the risk of bowel and lung cancer.

Sleep

Sleeping right after a meal may cause bloating, indigestion and irregular sleeping patterns. According to a study conducted by the University of Ioannina Medical School, people who wait a longer time to go to bed after a meal have a significantly lower risk of stroke. This is why it’s important to avoid going to bed for at least 2 hours after a meal.

Shower

Showering after a meal increases the blood flow to your limbs while reducing the blood flow in the stomach. This will weaken your digestion and cause stomach pain.

Drink tea

Drinking tea after a meal can disrupt the iron absorption in the body. Tea contains tannic acid which binds with iron and protein from food, which results in 87% decrease in the absorption of iron. Iron deficiency is a serious health problem that can cause poor appetite, cold feet and hands, weakness, dizziness, fatigue and pale skin.

As you can see, eating fruit or lying down after a meal are not so innocent after all. Change these habits immediately in order to live a healthier life.
